The bottom part of this block is a rectangular prism. The top part is a square pyramid. You want to cover the block entirely with paper. How much paper do you need? Use a pencil and paper to explain your reasoning.

Answer:

1596 cm² of paper

Explanation:

surface area of rectangular prism

= area of base (underneath) + 4 vertical sides

= (18 X 14) + (14 X 14) + (18 X 14) + (14 X 14) + (18 X 14) = 1148.

surface area of pyramid

= 4 X triangle

= 4 ((14/2) X 16)

= 4 (7 X 16)

= 448

total area = 1148 + 448

= 1596 cm² of paper
