since the common logs are adding you can multiply the arguments, x and x-3,

(x)(x-3) = x^2 - 3x
log (x^2 - 3x) = 28

now change from log form to exponential form. common logs have an assumed base of 10.

10^28 = x^2 - 3x
1E28 = x^2 - 3x
