(A special Visitor- Readworks.org) Read these sentences from the text. But just as Luke was about to take Joe’s vitals once again, he heard a knock behind him. He snapped his head around to see a young woman standing in the doorway. Luke turned back to look at Joe. Much to his surprise, his eyes were full of tears. How could the last sentence be rewritten so that it is less vague, without altering its meaning?

Answer:

"After noticing the presence of a young woman, Luke was surprised to see that Joe was about to cry."

Step-by-step explanation:

Rewriting a sentence without changing its meaning is a literary technique known as paraphrase. Paraphrase is very useful when it is necessary to quote an idea from another author, or when you want to present a text in a more objective, less subjunctive and phage form. An example of this can be seen in the sentence above, where the last sentence of the excerpt presented was rewritten, using different words, but maintaining the meaning.
