A solid wooden prism has a rectangular base with sides 5 inches, 7 inches and a height of 5 inches. A hole, in the shape of a cylinder with a radius of 1 inch, is drilled through the entire length of the prism. Find the volume remaining in the prism to the nearest cubic.

Answer:

volume remaining ≈ 153 in³

Explanation:

the volume remaining after the cylinder has been drilled is

volume of prism - volume of cylinder

volume of prism = lbh ( l is length, b is breadth, h is height )

= 5 × 7 × 5

= 175 in³

volume of cylinder = πr²h ( r is the radius and h the length of cylinder )

= π × 1² × 7

= 7π in³

volume remaining = 175 - 7π

= 175 - 21.99

= 153.01

≈ 153 in³ ( to the nearest cubic inch )
