The religion that began in India but is rarely practiced there is Buddhism. Although it originated in ancient India, it gradually declined in popularity in the country over the centuries due to various reasons, including the rise of Hinduism and Islam. Today, Buddhism is most widely practiced in East and Southeast Asia, including countries like China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Korea. However, there are still some Buddhist communities in India, particularly in the northern states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Sikkim, where important Buddhist pilgrimage sites such as Bodh Gaya and Sarnath are located.
