In addition to trying to end slavery, abolitionists from 1830 to 1860 pioneered various social and political reforms, including the promotion of women's rights, public education, prison reform, and temperance (the movement to limit or ban alcohol consumption). Many abolitionists saw these causes as interconnected with their efforts to end slavery and sought to create a more just and equitable society. Some prominent abolitionists, such as Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, also became leaders in the women's suffrage movement after the Civil War.
