Answer:

A wedge is basically a simple machine that consists of two inclined planes, back-to-back. For a wedge, the effort (force) is applied to the vertical (height) of the wedge.

Some examples are knives, axes, chisels, wedges etc.

Their usage is simply for splitting wood, lifting something, cutting etc.

It can be used to separate two objects or portions of an object, lift up an object, or hold an object in place. It functions by converting a force applied to its blunt end into forces perpendicular (normal) to its inclined surfaces.
