Why did forced labor continue after the civil world

Forced labor continued after the Civil War throughout much of the country due to the need for workers in a market where there were fewer available people. For example, the sharecropping movement in the South required laborers who were paid so little that they were practically still slaves. Likewise, the railroads required laborers to build the tracks, although these were mostly Chinese immigrants rather than blacks.
