Through the introduction of affirmative action laws, such as reservations in education, government employment, and political participation, the rights of Dalits or lower caste Indians have improved in democratic India. Untouchability and caste-based discrimination are also prohibited under the Indian Constitution, and numerous laws have been passed to outlaw and punish these practices. However, despite these initiatives, there are still some areas of the country where Dalits are still the target of discrimination and violence.
