Tropical cyclones develop in the late summer because of the Atlantic Basin. There are two main things are needed for their formation that include warm ocean waters (80 degrees or higher) and weak vertical wind shear.

During the late summer months, the sea surface temperatures reach their highest levels and provide tropical cyclones with the energy they need to develop into major storms.
