Ms. Toney bought a rug for her classroom. The rug is 8 feet wide. The diagonal length of the rug is 14 feet. What would be the length of the rug she bought?

Explanation:

a^2+b^2=c^2

think of this as a triangle, we are going to use Pythagorean theorem.

the hypotenus is 14 ft and one of the legs is 8 ft. so the other leg is x

8^2 + x^2 = 14^2

64 + x^2 = 196

subtract the 64 on both sides

x^2 = 132

to counter the square we square root it

so x = the square root of 132 which comes out to a decimal

11.489....

rounded it would be 11.49
