How does an introduced species affect native species?

They can change the balance of other species in the ecosystem of the area that they inhabit. For example, the mongoose was introduced to Hawaii to control rats in the sugar cane fields. However, mongooses also eat many other things including birds eggs. As a result the bird population plummeted and now the mongoose is highly controlled.
