n = 4

Explanation:

simplify left side first:

(1/2) (-4 + 6n) = -2 + 3n.

now simplify right side:

(1/3)n + (2/3) (n + 9) = (1/3)n + (2/3)n + (2/3) (9) = (3/3)n + 6 = n + 6.

so, we now have -2 + 3n = n + 6.

subtract n from both sides and add 2 to both sides

-2 + 3n - n + 2 = n + 6 - n + 2

2n = 8

n = 4
