Answer: Oedipus insists on letting all hear Creon's news because he wants to give the update to the people from Thebes right away. Oedipus accuses Creon of trying to overthrow him since it was he who recommended that Tiresias come. Creon rebuffs her, saying he will never allow a woman to tell him what to do. Ismene emerges from the palace, weeping, and says that she will share the guilt. Creon explains that the gods are angry at Thebes because a murderer is making the city ritually unclean, causing pollution. Creon has decreed that the traitor Polynices must not be given proper burial, and Antigone is the only one who will speak against this decree.
