Why are only about 100 of the millions of known substances identified as elements?

Explanation: Substances that are made of just one kind of atom are called elements. Atoms of the same element are all essentially alike, and they're different from atoms of other elements. If atoms were only found in their elemental form, there would only be about 100 different substances in the world.

The main reason why is because all of the elements we identify as such today are singular molecules of a constant substance. This differs from the compounds of more than one element mixed together.
