A man could arrive on time for an appointment if he drove a car 40mph; however, since he left the house 15 minutes late, he drove the car 50 mph and arrive 3 min early how far from his house was his appointment

Explanation:

Let us assume the distance between his home and place of appointment be x and t would be time taken at 40 mph

As we know that

Distance = speed × time

So,

x = 40t ............(1)

As he left the house 15 minutes late and also drove his car at 50 mph and arrive 3 minutes early

So,

15 minutes = 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25 hour

3 minutes = 3 ÷ 60 = 0.05 hour

Now the actual time taken is

= t - 0.25 - 0.05

= t - 0.30

x = 50(t - 0.30)

x = 50t - 15.............(2)

Now

40t = 50t - 15

10t = 26

t = 3 ÷ 2 hour

Now

x = 40 × 3 ÷ 2

= 60 miles
