Lets say x and y are our numbers. x is the smaller number, y is the larger.

We can construct the equations:

x = 0.5y

x + y = 63

Substitute 0.5y for x in the second equation.

0.5y + y = 63

1.5y = 63

y = 42.

x = 21.
