a small pool contains 30,000 gallons of water. the pump filters water every 8 hours. what is the rate, in gallons per hour, of the pump for this pool?

this means it filters the whole water (30,000 gallons) every 8 hours.

so the pump pumps with the rate of

30,000 gallons / 8 hours

but we need the adjusted rate for gallons per 1 hour.

so, what do we do ?

we divide top and bottom (numerator and denominator) of the fraction (every ratio is also a fraction) by 8. it is important that we use the same value for both to keep the overall value of the fraction unchanged.

so we get

30,000/8 / 8/8 = 3,750 gallons / 1 hour
