How long is the leg of a right triangle if the hypotenuse is 40 ft and one leg is 25 ft? Round to the nearest hundredth.

Pythagorean theorem for right triangles

c^2 = a^2 + b^2 c = hypot a and b are legs

40^2 = 25^2 + b^2

b^2 = 40^2 - 25^2

b^2 = 975

b = sqrt (975) = 5 sqrt (39) = 31.22 ft
