Operation Torch was the code name for the Allied invasion of North Africa during World War II. The operation was launched in November 1942 and aimed to secure the region and establish a base from which to launch an invasion of southern Europe. The success of Operation Torch allowed the Allies to gain control of the Mediterranean and set the stage for the invasion of Italy and later, the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
