In "The Hunger Games," Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place in the games and becomes the first-ever tribute from District 12 to win the Hunger Games. In "Catching Fire," she is forced to compete in the Hunger Games again, this time as a victor from the previous games. She also becomes a symbol of rebellion against the Capitol, which puts her in even greater danger than before.
