In philosophy, qualitative identity refers to the idea that two things can be identical in quality, or in some of their properties, without being identical in their substance or essence. For example, two paintings may be qualitatively identical in terms of their color, texture, and subject matter, but they are not the same painting. Qualitative identity is often contrasted with numerical identity, which refers to the idea that two things are identical in every respect and are therefore the same thing.
