Cole's initial attitude towards his punishment is one of defiance and anger. He blames everyone else for his problems and refuses to take responsibility for his actions. He also engages in self-destructive behaviors such as drinking etc... By engaging in these behaviors, Cole is sabotaging his own chances for success in the program.

Additionally, Cole is also his own worst enemy in his relationships with others. He has a tendency to push people away and lash out at them when he feels threatened or vulnerable. This behavior creates obstacles to building positive relationships and receiving the support he needs to succeed.
