Explanation:

Area of trapezoid height x average of bases

area = (x+2) * ( 12-4x + 12)/2

= (x+2) (12-2x) = 12x -2x^2 +24 -4x

area = -2x^2 +8x+24 will be a maximum at x = - b/2a = -8/(2*-2) = 2

x=2

Max area = 32 ft^2
