Explanation:

The root of a number is the same as writing that number to 1 over the root. In a square root, it is what number multiplied by itself (x*x), as you can see there are two, so it is that number to the 1/2 power. another example is something to the seventh power. that is calculating what number multiplied by itself 7 times would equal the nmber you are taking the root of. (x*x*x*x*x*x*x) so this would be a number to the 1/7 power.
