In the novel "Holes" by Louis Sachar, we learn that Zero's real name is Hector Zeroni and that he has had a difficult life. Zero was born in a small village in Mexico, but his mother was unable to care for him and abandoned him at a young age. He was taken in by an orphanage, where he was mistreated and eventually ran away. Zero then lived on the streets and survived by stealing food. He eventually made his way to Camp Green Lake, where he met Stanley and their lives became intertwined. As for Zero's mother, we learn that she is also known as "La Belle Dame Sans Merci," which means "the beautiful lady without mercy" in French. It is suggested that she is a cruel and manipulative woman who has caused harm to both Zero and his family. The details about Zero's past and his mother help to explain why he is such a guarded and troubled character, and add depth to his character development throughout the novel.
