The 5 is an exponent. This format is a shortcut for multiplying. But it means to multiply 3 times itself, over and over again (5 times)

3 × 5 is of course regular multiplication as your learned in elementary school. 3 × 5 is just 15. (regular multiplication like this is a shortcut for adding-- it means to add 3 groups of 5 or 5 groups of 3)
