Marta saved up money in order to buy a shirt she wanted. She spent $35.22 on the shirt.
Afterwards she had $12.75 left of what she had saved. Let m be the original amount of money

Well we should first assume that we don't know what she originally had altogether, so I would assume this would start as a m=... sort of problem. Since we know she spent 35.22 on the shirt and know she had 12.75 left over we can assume when these totals are added we get her original amount of money that was saved up.

m = original amount saved up

Spent = 35.22

Left = 12.75

m=35.22+12.75
