A two-dimensional graph, also known as a coordinate plane or Cartesian plane, is divided into four quadrants. The quadrants are numbered in a counterclockwise direction, starting from the top-right quadrant and going around to the other quadrants.
To name the quadrants on a graph:
- Look at the axes of the graph. The horizontal axis is called the x-axis, and the vertical axis is called the y-axis.
- Identify the point where the x-axis and y-axis intersect. This point is called the origin and is typically labelled with the letter "O".
- The top-right quadrant is called Quadrant I. This quadrant contains points with positive x-coordinates and positive y-coordinates.
- The top-left quadrant is called Quadrant II. This quadrant contains points with negative x-coordinates and positive y-coordinates.
- The bottom-left quadrant is called Quadrant III. This quadrant contains points with negative x-coordinates and negative y-coordinates.
- The bottom-right quadrant is called Quadrant IV. This quadrant contains points with positive x-coordinates and negative y-coordinates.
Point C is in the fourth quadrant. We can verify this because it is located at a positive x-coordinate and a negative y-coordinate. (4,-4)
