Affirmative Action is the governments answer to discrimination; a huge problem before the civil rights act of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Essentially a set of laws and policies that the federal government created to help with discrimination. Affirmative Action attempts to favor groups who have been disadvantaged or discriminated against. While many assume Affirmative Action is only helping minorities this is not entirely the case. It truly is helping “disadvantaged” groups, so this includes not necessarily just minorities, but also women. Some of the restrictions placed on employers include not asking directly for gender, age, national origin, religion, race, or genetic information during any step of the hiring process. The simplest way to explain Affirmative Action is by example: two candidates are being considered for one position. The candidates have all the same education, experience, and are otherwise equally suited for the job. However, one is from a “disadvantaged group,” and Affirmative Action states that; that is the person that should get the job.

Affirmative action deals with not just the workplace anymore but has expanded to include universities. Advocates of the action say that it is critical for building diversity in the student population. Those against the action says it overlooks aspects of diversity not encompassed by race. As with most modern issues and debates, the discussion has been raging since the 1960’s and 70’s. This June the Supreme Court is again going to have to hear about affirmative action, as two cases have been brought against Harvard and the University of North Carolina. These cases are both brought against the universities by Students for Fair Admissions. These claims are nothing new for the Supreme court, as they have seen half a dozen such cases since the late 70’s. Showing that this problem spans decades, and remains relevant today. Affirmative action is a concept that resonates with not just employment, but to inclusivity everywhere.

Affirmative action is just one step on the multi-level ladder that is inclusivity and diversity. Not just relevant in the work field, but relevant in all programs needing admission into them. Whether it be schools, employment, clubs, or groups; diversity and thus affirmative action are as relevant as it was in the 1960’s and 1970’s. As a woman I am grateful for the inclusion of my sex, and while the government still has great strides to take for women’s rights (another discussion), affirmative action is a large step in the right direction. Not only the government but also higher power in jobs. Making sure that I am being treated just as someone of the opposite sex. I need to make sure that I am given the same opportunities and are able to use and take advantage of all equally. I will use this to my future endeavors, to be more mindful of diversity in general, and the struggles that different disadvantaged groups face.

As a woman, affirmative action is a significant step forward, and I will use it to be more conscious.
