I believe all you do is plug in n=1, which makes a = 1-3, so a=-2. Now, you substitute n=2, and that makes 2a = 2-3, so 2a = -1 and a=-1/2. For n = 3, 3a = 0, a = 0, and finally
n = 4, 4a = 1, a = 1/4. So, the list is
-2, -1/2, 0, 1/4.
