1st statement:

There is only one adult and we know the cost of his/her skates. It is $4. We have 5 children but we do not know what the cost of their skates are so we use the variable x to stand for the cost of the skates.

2nd statement:

To find the profit, we would take what we sold the bags for and subtract out the cost of making the bags. The variable would stand for the number of bags sold.

3rd statement:

It starts out 16 degrees and every hour falls 4 degrees. The variable stands for how many hours have passed.
