Panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent and unexpected panic attacks. Panic attacks are sudden and intense episodes of fear or discomfort that can be accompanied by physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, sweating, trembling, chest pain, shortness of breath, or a feeling of choking. Panic disorder is diagnosed when a person experiences recurrent, unexpected panic attacks, and has persistent worry or fear about having additional attacks or the consequences of the attacks.

Panic disorder can be related to other anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), specific phobias, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Panic disorder can also be related to depression, as people with panic disorder may experience depressive symptoms or episodes. In some cases, panic disorder may co-occur with other mental health conditions or substance abuse disorders.
