a. Griffith and Bitzer mastered parallel editing by following multiple stories within one film in a logical manner. They also understood how to use filmic techniques to complement dramatic expression. Such as using the close-up to express fear and dread, or using a long-shot to capture a lot of action and show large groups of people. They also understood that short takes can "speed" up the action and tension of a sequence.
