Law of Cosines

c^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2 ab cosΦ

for this example c = 8 a = 16 b = 17 Φ= Angle C

you are trying to solve for Angle C

8^2 = 16^2 + 17^2 - 2 (16)(17) cos C

-481 = -2 (16)(17) cos C

.88419 = cos C

arccos ( .884190 ) = C = 27.8 degrees
