Mosses and lichens help to form soil by being the first organisms to appear on a bare rock during primary succession. While mosses are plants, lichens are a mutualistic combination of fungus and algae. Mosses and lichens break down the rock by releasing organic acids that disintegrate rock over time.

Answer: As mosses or lichens die, their remains decompose and are added back to the soil. The soil is then able to support a greater variety of plant life because it has been enriched with more nutrients.
