The Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act attempted to solve the issue of B) the extension of slavery into the western territories. These compromises were attempts to balance the power between free and slave states and determine whether new territories would be allowed to have slavery or not. The Missouri Compromise established a boundary line between free and slave territories, the Compromise of 1850 allowed California to enter the Union as a free state while also introducing the Fugitive Slave Act, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act introduced the idea of popular sovereignty, allowing settlers in the new territories to decide whether or not to allow slavery. These compromises were unsuccessful in preventing the outbreak of the Civil War, but they did demonstrate the ongoing tension between the North and South over the issue of slavery
