Why was it important to keep Maryland as a part of the Union?

Maryland contained the Union's largest armory,
If Maryland seceded, then Washington, D.C would be cutoff from the Union.
Maryland was the perfect launching point to invade the Confederacy.

Answer:It was a border state.

Explanation: Lincoln called for the act to protect a certain part of land with soldiers which was called, martial law. If Maryland would've succeeded and joined the Confederates, then the Union would've been surrounded by Confederate states.
