Paternity leave is important, too. If fathers were encouraged to take time off, they could be more involved in child care and become more quickly bonded with their new offspring. Many new mothers receive paid maternity leave from their companies or take up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave through the Family and Medical Leave Act, but sadly most fathers don't take advantage of family leave. Extra support from fathers would help mothers, and babies would undoubtedly benefit from more father involvement. Fathers who spend more time with their babies after birth remain more involved with their children later on.
