given

(x - 1) is a factor of f(x) then f(1) = 0 , that is

3(1)³ + 5(1) + k = 0

3(1) + 5 + k = 0

3 + 5 + k = 0

8 + k = 0 ( subtract 8 from both sides )

k = - 8
