Why would I have an ‘a’ in ‘Ellas pagan a el (al) maestro’? And why wouldn’t I have one in ‘Ella tea Baja a el (al) supermercado’? My teacher marked both wrong, the first for not having an ‘a’, and the second for not having an ‘a’. Any thoughts?

When you have the statement “a el” you combine them to be “Al.”
For example you say “Yo voy al supermercado” instead of “Yo voy a el supermercado.”
