  • The ancient Greeks have had a profound impact on modern Western society in many ways. Here are five examples:

1. Architecture: The Greeks were known for their sophisticated sculpture and architecture. The most famous example of Greek architecture is the Parthenon, a former temple located on the Acropolis in Athens². Its most distinctive feature are its many columns: seventeen on the sides and eight columns at either end, inside of which is a second row of six columns². Today, columns are used in many public buildings, like churches and libraries².

2. Philosophy: The Greeks pretty much invented modern philosophy¹. They were interested in questions about how people should live their lives and what makes life worth living¹. Their ideas about ethics and morality continue to influence modern philosophy today¹.

3. Science: The Greeks made significant contributions to science and medicine¹. They used some of their new knowledge to make inventions like the water wheel¹. Today, we still use many of their scientific ideas and methods¹.

4. Literature and theatre: Literature and theatre was an important aspect of Greek culture and influenced modern drama³. Greek plays were performed in amphitheatres that could seat thousands of people³. Today, we still perform plays in theatres that are based on ancient Greek designs³.

5. Sports: The ancient Greeks were also known for their athletic prowess and held the first Olympic Games in 776 BC¹. Today, we still hold Olympic Games every four years that are based on ancient Greek traditions¹.
