Gronniosaw thought that the book talked to his master as he saw Captain Sabbath moving his lips while looking at the bible. As the Captain was done reading, Gronniosaw delightfully approached the book and put his ears close to it. he couldn't hear anything. This incident made him believe that the bible did not speak to him because he thought that everything despised him as he was black.
