The crux of Narcissus character is his own self involvement, he rejects echo because he is more or less in love with himself. He would not care about Hera's punishment because he is to wrapped up in his own vanity. As far as he is concerned a flower holds no beauty to him. He would talk about himself and himself alone because he is too self absorbed to do otherwise. Narcissus is where the word Narcissist is derived from.
