What do you do when you don't know what you want to be in life but still want to go to college and not disappoint anyone?

Answer:

Point number one: Maybe you should brainstorm other next steps, or at least what other steps interest you.

Point 2: It is nice for you to choose to do something because your family expects you to but when will you make a choice based on what you want to do?

Point 3: There are many “smart” people who do some pretty fantastic things without a college degree. If you want to go to college you should go. But being smart is a relative term. There are many smart people who do not smart things. Like wasting time and money drifting through a college experience without a direction.

My recommendation? Talk with someone, a high school counselor, a college counselor, a trusted mentor, a favorite teacher, or a valued ecclesiastical leader. A special relative like a sister, an uncle, or a Godparent. Someone who can help you get to know your strengths, your aptitude, your interests, etc. Then begin to make decisions. Those decisions may include going to college. But it may also be to take a year off and travel, do volunteer work, work to earn money for potential college, or do an internship in a particular field of study. After some self-examination and time making informed decisions, then consider your options. A career you learn about in college. Work where you learn a trade. Attendance at a tech school or community college that will give you a trade. Join the military and have them teach you a skill. The more of this you do, the more you will feel prepared for your future career.
