Harriet Tubman played a significant role in the raid on the Combahee River in Beaufort, South Carolina, in June 1863 during the American Civil War. Tubman was working as a nurse and cook for the Union Army at the time and was recruited by Colonel James Montgomery to assist in the raid. Tubman used her knowledge of the local area and the Underground Railroad to help guide Union troops and led a group of formerly enslaved people to freedom. The raid resulted in the liberation of around 700 enslaved people and the destruction of Confederate property.
