5 years ago Person X was 5 times older than Person y , so the equation will be:

x - 5= 5(y-5)

x = 5y - 20

simularily after 8 years , x will be 3 times older than y , so

x + 8 = 3(y + 8.)

I will now try to find y by equating value of x into y:

5y - 20 + 8 = 3y + 24

5y - 3y = 24 + 20 - 8

2y = 44 - 8 = 36

y = 18

so x will be = 5 (18) - 20.

x = 90-20 = 70 years.

therefore father is 70 years , and son is 18 years old.
