- Kent State University
- Jackson State University
Four college students on the mostly working-class campus of Kent State (Ohio) University were killed by National Guardsmen, and two others were gunned down by police at Jackson State, a historically Black college in Mississippi. The killings at Kent State and Jackson State prompted more demonstrations and further tarnished the image of the war. Not everyone sympathized with the slain college students or their cause, however. Construction workers in New York City rioted in the streets, beat anti-war demonstrators, and raised a U.S. flag that had been lowered to honor the Kent State victims.
