One example of a settlement that grew along a major trade route is Venice, Italy. Venice grew prosperous during the Middle Ages as a hub for trade between Europe and the Middle East.

Another example is the city of Timbuktu, which grew along the trans-Saharan trade routes in West Africa. Timbuktu became a center of learning and trade in the medieval period, connecting sub-Saharan Africa with North Africa and the Mediterranean.
