Answer:

The mission of the X-1 aircraft was to investigate the transonic speed range (speeds from just below to just above the speed of sound) and, if possible, to break the “sound barrier”. The X-1 was the first high-speed aircraft built purely for aviation research purposes, and it was designed to overcome the aerodynamic problems that occurred near the speed of sound . The X-1 program was a joint effort by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the Army Air Forces (AAF), and Bell Aircraft Corporation . The X-1 achieved its historic mission on October 14, 1947, when Captain Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager piloted the X-1-1 to a speed of Mach 1.06 (700 mph) at an altitude of 43,000 feet, becoming the first person to fly faster than sound
